They Come Back – EVENTually. The Story of Storm Maker Event Production

After 2 years of turbulence caused by Covid, Malaysia’s social and economic conditions finally show signs of stability. The easing of communal restrictions and opening of borders has allowed SMEs to breathe a sigh of relief and start rebuilding their businesses. One of the hardest hit industries was event management, as they were the first to be impacted and the last to be allowed to operate again. However, with concerts, graduations and weddings now back in full force, these businesses are well on the road to recovery.

Our latest Co-working and Storage customer, Storm Maker Events Production is one of these businesses. They specialize in corporate events like conferences, conventions, and gala dinners. Kenneth Lee, founder of Storm Maker Events shared his journey from the start of the pandemic to now “Overall, the pandemic hit our industry very hard, because all events came completely to a halt. The company had to release all employees as there was no revenue to support the company’s operational costs. As for me, I had to try out some odd jobs to survive through these tough times.”

We wanted to know what kept him going through this period:

“We always believed excellent customer service is the key to success in this industry. Most of our clientele had been with us for years. One such client had been with us for almost 15 years. It is because of this depth of experience within our team, that this exceptional service could be provided across all aspects of the event – from conceptualization to execution. I held on to the hope that this level of service meant that our customers would reconnect with us as soon as things opened up.”

How is the situation of the business today as things are back to normal?

“Things are getting better since May this year as SOPs are becoming more relaxed and client’s worries are reduced.

As you know, events had only been allowed to start up again recently. The momentum at first, was very slow because clients were so worried to hold big scale events, many had also felt overwhelmed by the strict SOPs.”

What was the biggest challenge you’ve faced at work and how did you cope with it?

“The biggest challenge we had faced of course is during this Pandemic. I didn’t give up on this industry as I still had so much passion for it. During this pandemic, it gave me more time to look back at our previous jobs to find ways how to improve them. The fact that our type of event is held at a large scale did not help with this.

I started doing a lot of surveying and idea collecting which I had hoped would be useful when the industries came back, it proved useful so much so that we managed to put them to practice with our last few events.”

What was the situation/issue you were facing that led you guys to come to Cube Self Storage for a co-working solution? How did Cube benefit your company through this recovery phase?
“Before the pandemic, we had partnered with one event carpentry factory, where we shared office space with them. But unfortunately, our partner had been diagnosed with cancer while Covid was still widely spreading, this led us to the decision to close down the factory.
As we were looking for a self-storage company to store some of our event props, we came across Cube Self Storage which could provide us with what we were looking for.”

Kenneth continues “When our event industry had kick-started again, we also started looking for office space, we had found out that Cube provided this solution while using the storage space. We found the solution comfortable and easy in terms of accessibility.”

How is your experience with Cube’s services so far?

StormMaker productions started with Cube back in 2021 with a medium-sized personal self-storage unit and more recently have taken up a Cube Suite for 2 pax to cater to their business.

Kenneth and his team have shown that perseverance and resilience are the foundation for overcoming the challenges and obstacles in their industry. It clearly will not be an easy journey, but one that is truly worth it for the passion they have for the industry.
