In conjunction with the Merdeka celebration, Cube Self Storage wants to look back at our country’s proud and historical moments. Together we have achieved and created many beautiful things, and we are still growing. This brief throwback is just a little reminder of things that we are proud of, and an inspiration for us to continue our pursuit in becoming a greater nation.
1957
Malaya becomes independent, and Tunku Abdul Rahman became our first prime minister.
1963
Malaysia was formed, comprising of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak.
1964
We competed for the first time under the name ‘Malaysia’ at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
1972
We made our Paralympic Games début at the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg.
1981
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad takes office, and then later in 2003 he retired as Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister.
1997
The iconic Petronas Twin Towers was completed! It was the world’s tallest buildings from 1998 to 2004, and today the towers remain to be the world’s tallest twin towers
1998
Kuala Lumpur became the first Asian city to host the Commonwealth Games.
2000
Zeti Akhtar Aziz became the first woman to lead our central bank when she was appointed the seventh governor of Bank Negara Malaysia.
2005
Malaysian squash player, Nicol David, captured the World Open title in Hong Kong. She became the World No.1 in woman’s squash, and the first Asian woman to be ranked World No. 1 in squash.
2007
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor became the first Malaysian astronaut sent into space.
2012
Our diver, Pandelela Rinong, won a bronze medal in the 10-metre diving platform for the first time. She’s the first female Malaysian athlete to win a medal at the Olympics, and the first to win an Olympic medal in any sport other than Badminton.
2017
An astrophysics PhD student, Nur Adlyka Ainul Annuar was among a group of astronomers who discovered a hidden supermassive black hole.
2018
After 61 years in power, Barisan Nasional is defeated by Pakatan Harapan in the 2018 Malaysian general election. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad returned to office at the age of 92. Guinness World Records named him the Oldest current Prime Minister.
The George Town Literary Festival (GTLF) took home The International Excellence Awards 2018: The Literary Festival Award at The London Book Fair 2018. GTLF is the first literary event in Southeast Asia to receive the Literary Festival Award.

2019
We are making education a priority, to be more inclusive and of good quality. We have increased the access to quality education for the marginalised communities, and now stateless children are able to enrol in schools.
Empowering women! More women are appointed to high positions in various fields across Malaysia.
